The police in Ogun State have arrested a secondary school teacher, identified as Olaniran Lateef Adewale, over alleged sexual assaults and kidnapping of two young ladies in their 20s.
The suspect was until his arrest, a Mathematics teacher at Ebenezer Grammar School Iberekodo, Abeokuta.The State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Motunrayo Adijat Adeleye, who disclosed this yesterday, said a member of her team was contacted by one of the victims, and the ministry immediately swung into action to investigate the allegation.
She said: “On Saturday, a member of our team got a call from a young lady that she had been sexually abused. We swung into action, located her, and took her to the laboratory to run several tests before taking her to the police station to make a report”.
Consequently, the ministry team and the police went to the suspect’s house to effect his arrest, but after several knocks, he refused to open the gate. However, we were able to locate the landlord’s relation, who assisted the team in gaining access to the compound where he was later arrested.
“When we got into the compound, we heard another girl’s cry for help. This time the victim was a 400 level student. He held the girl hostage after the lady told him the huge amount her parents paid for school fees, on the grounds that the victim will only be released if her parents send money to him. The girl also accused him of forcibly having sexual intercourse with her and threatening to kill her.
“ With the support of the police, we arrested Adewale, a secondary school mathematics teacher at Ebenezer Grammar School Iberekodo, Abeokuta, and a native of Ipokia Local Council, with OGNO.30650 of Ogun State Teaching Service Commission.”
Adeleye told The Guardian that the suspect did not deny the allegations, but claimed he committed the act because of loneliness.
When contacted, spokesperson for Ogun State Police Command, Superintendent of (SP), Omolola Odutola, confirmed that the suspect was in custody and would soon be charged to court.
